RE ORIENTATION

Picture

De-schooling- re claiming the natural cognitive tools and process- Orientation program

Learning to learn ( from teacher/taught paradigm to learner led paradigm)

There is a need to re orient the first year students from ‘teacher dependency’ to ‘independent learner’ there by enabling to student to regain the qualities and abilities of a true learner damaged by the ‘schooling’. Openness, ability to hold doubts, exploring with out fear of making mistakes, humility and innocence. And help students to re look at the tools acquired like rote learning, memory, reasoning etc. These skills are good for storing and processing information not for perception and creativity.
Why
10 to 12 years of spoon fed schooling makes the student in to a passive learner. Where as design education demands independent & self-initiated active learning.
This shift can be quite difficult as 10 years the student had relied on teachers’ words and knowledge thereby making memory and reasoning the only faculty that developed. This leads to fear of exploration, fear of making mistakes, inability to judge ones own work, inability to hold the question/doubt as the mind is very static and is full of rigid notions of what is right & wrong. The brain structure is of a believer, just collections of truism & belief. Habit formed mind.

LEARNING TO UNLEARN

This is to re orient the first year students from ‘teacher dependency’ to ‘independent learner’ there by enabling to student to regain the qualities and abilities of a true learner damaged by the ‘schooling’. Openness, ability to hold doubts, exploring with out fear of making mistakes, humility and innocence. And help students to re look at the tools acquired like rote learning, memory, reasoning etc. These skills are good for storing and processing information not for perception and creativity.

Modern education not only kills creativity but also kills the cultural diversity as it ignores the two most important aspects of knowledge creation, which is the biological process involved in making sense of the world  and the need to connect with the space in which they live. This just means the knower and the subject of knowledge engage concretely in a dialogic or a feedback looped situation.

So naturally the biggest concern about the present main stream education is that it kills creativity. But schools and ‘schooling’ not only kills creativity, it also kills authenticity, cultural diversity and  aesthetic sense.

LEARNING TO SEE

seeing is our primary sense which locates and roots us to the world. Blind also ultimately root and locate themselves to the world. This had been the natural process till literacy was introduced on a large scale to human culture. Instead of being in the world we became 'knowings' of the word. We live in the realm of language and mind.

Modernity represents this fall of the senses. Indiscriminate destruction of the outer nature proceeds from the destruction of the inner nature. Mind's taking over the creation of knowledge by bypassing the senses has resulted in the separation of the mind and the body.

LEARNING TO BE

Our being in the world is established by being in experience. We are rooted through senses, experience and awareness. Senses are two way tools that connect us to the outer world and awaken our inner world simultaneously. Senses are the primary tools and before literacy got too much importance, language was used in support of the sense only to achieve this rootedness.
